Question: What's up with my car battery?

( Back )

Answer #1:

Depending on how old the battery is, it could be bad. you could also have a bad ground wire, or dirty battery terminals. Anything carbonated is good to clean your battery terminals, so you can just pour come coke or something on there, and it should eat up the corrosion. Also, make sure your connections to your battery are nice and tight.

You can take it to autozone and get it tested as well.

Answer #2:

Could be two reasons:
1. Bad starter, it may need replacement. It's about 300 depending on make and where you get it done. 2. The battery. Check the acid levels and the expiration date (yes, they actually have one) and I think auto zone will test the battery for free.. Might take it to them before spending a lot of money.

Good luck!

Answer #3:

It's probably your battery being old but if on the outside chance it is you terminals, you can get a battery terminal cleaning tool for a couple of bucks at the parts store. Has brushes for inside the terminal and outside of the post, ask the guys how it works.
If you want to pour coke on the battery, that's your choice, myself I keep coke out of my stomach and away from my car.

Answer #4:

You could easily solve if there is a battery or alternator issue with an inexpensive hand held volt meter. A fully charged battery will test 12.85 volts. If the voltage had dropped below 12 volts you need to charge the battery with an inexpensive automatic self leveling battery charger @ 2 amps till the green light comes on in the charger window. Wait 12 hours and check the battery again after the residual surface charge is gone. If the battery doesn't show 12.30 volts or more it needs replacing. With the volt meter still hooked to the battery, start the car and read the voltage again. You should see between 13.5 - 14.0 volts. If the voltage is below 13.5 your box store short warranty alternator is no good.
